Starting with a strong foundation
Mastering sight words is an important first step for life-long reading success. Sight words are words that appear in text so often that they need to be recognized immediately. We do not want children using reading strategies to decode these words. Rather, they need to learn them "by sight," just as they would their shapes, colors, or numbers.
We begin with the Preprimer Sight Words. The next step is the Primer List. From this point on, we focus on grade level lists (First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade). Simply click on the green list title to access a list you can print and practice with your child at home.
Please work with your child on his/her sight words. I will assess them on a regular basis throughout the year. As soon as your child masters a list, go on to the next one. Try to make it a game. For example, make double copies of each word to play memory. The more fun you can make it, the quicker your child will learn!
